Weapons

Firearms/Ammunition

1. Weapons are essential to survival in the zombie apocalypse. You should never have just one weapon, the more weapons that you can acquire and stock up in your zombie bunker the better your chance is that you won’t become zombie meat.

2. The first thought most people have in a zombie apocalypse is to load up with the biggest weapons and go out and kill all the zombies. This is foolish, you should arm yourself to prepare for a zombie encounter, this takes careful consideration, a calm head and well planned analysis of all the factors.

3. Remember to train constantly, you should be trained with all your weapons.

4. Stock up on any types of firearms you can get. Out of all the weapons you can acquire firearms are the most essential to survival.

5. Keep them cleaned, keep them oiled, keep them loaded, and all ways have one close.

6. Always have plenty of ammunition stocked up.

7. You should have at least one handgun per person with 250 rounds of ammunition for each gun.

8. Have at least one assault rifle per person with 500 rounds of ammunition for each gun.

9. Also, have at least 2 close ranger guns such as a shotgun, and have about 200 rounds of ammunition total.

10. These are the minimum number of firearms and ammunition you should have, the more you can acquire the better.

11. Have all the extra weapons and ammunition that you won’t be carrying in a Armory, a separate storage room from everything else that you can lock up.

12. Make sure to keep inventory of all weapons and ammunition, and what is checked out and checked back in.

Edged Weapons

1.      A small one-handed hatchet or small one handed swords are great edged weapon to have, it can be easily swung compared to a big axe or huge sword in your bunker.

2.      Axes are good for one or two zombies, you must be cautious when using an axe as a weapon, it cannot be swung very fast and you can be surrounded by zombies very quick if not careful.

3.      Knifes are great to have stocked up. They can be easily cared and easy to use.

4.      Knifes can only kill a zombie, “when stabbed through the temple, eye socket, or base of the skull” (Brooks, 2003 p. 35). So, this weapon is used as a last resort weapon.

5.      Make sure you have a wet stone or some sort of way to sharpen you edged weapons because over time and use, they will become dull and need to be sharpened to maintain their usefulness.

Tools

Hand tools

1. Determine the task at hand that needs to be accomplished. (WARNING-the tools must be used for their intended purposes or otherwise it might result in personal injury.)

2. Wear the proper P.P.E (Personal Protective Equipment) with respect to the task. Make sure to stock eye protection, gloves, and any other protection you might need while using a tool in your bunker.

3. Keep tools in a specific location and standardize for easy access and use.

4. Before using tools make sure to inspect thoroughly and make sure there is not damage and it operates as intended.

5. After each use make sure clean your tools and put them back in their designated areas.

6. Clean up your work area making sure there are no present hazards.

Note: Even though the primary purpose for tools is to build, tools are not limited by this action and can be used in applicable situations where they can provide self-defense.

Power Tools

1. Determine the task at hand that needs to be accomplished. (WARNING-The tools must be used for their intended purposes, failure to do so might result in personal injury or death.)

2. Wear the proper P.P.E (Personal Protective Equipment) with respect to the task.

3. Power tools must be kept in a specific location and must be standardized for easy access and use.

4. Find a power source

5. Make sure that cords are clearly identified, to decrease the likelihood of someone to trip and fall. Place cover over if available.

6. Before each use inspect your power tools to see if they are still operation and for sign of damage. Make sure to examine the cord as well. (CAUTION-power tools make a large amount of noise which can attract zombies to your location.)

7. After each use make sure to clean your power tools and store them back in their designated areas.

8. Clean up your work area making sure there are no present hazards.

Cation: Make sure when you using either hand tools and power tools that you use them to their intended purposes, failure to do so can result in personal injury or death.

Note: Keep all tool user manuals in one safe place in your bunker.

Medical Supplies

1. It is important to possess the right medical tools, the right medicine, and the right materials that can be used to help care for injury or prevent death. Take an inquiry of every person, asking if they have any allergies to any specific medicine and for their medical history. This is the most crucial step in setting up an operational health clinic within your shelter.

2. Make a filing system that is organized and contains all the medical records of everyone in the shelter.

3. Next verify if there are any experienced medical professionals amongst the group of survivors, and assign them to their respected areas of expertise. If there are no members with medical knowledge gather what medical books you can, then apply the information from the book.

4. Hold instructional classes for staff to provide better service and insight on medical procedures.

5. Make a list of all the medical tools, medicine, and material you will need. To get you started here are some of the basic things you will need to start:

  • Alcohol
  • Sterile gloves
  • Bandages
  • Tweezers
  • Scalpel
  • Stethoscope
  • Thermometer
  • Ibuprofen
  • Sudafed
  • Anti-histamine

6. Organize supplies and label to ensure that certain medications don’t mixed up. (Notice: The misuse of medications might lead further health problems.)

7. Setup a security system that ensure the safety of staff and most importantly the patients

Mental Health

1. During a Zombie apocalypse, one’s first thought might not be on one’s mental health, but it is critical not to neglect care of one’s mental health in a state of survival.

2. Make sure to stock items for entertainment, such as books, magazines, decks of cards, and board games.

3. If a siege occurs you will be tormented with the moans of the undead for days, and potentially weeks. Stock up on earplugs for all of the people in your bunker.

4. Coloring books are becoming very popular for therapy, consider stocking a few as well as some colored pencils.

5. Don’t forget to spruce up your bunker. Perhaps put a motivational poster on the wall to remind you not to give up and that brighter days are coming. Anything that will help improve morale.

6. Make self-care a daily priority. Daily personal reflections and meditation will be helpful in maintaining a calm composure during an outbreak. You will be better able to help others if you take care of yourself.

7. If you play a musical instrument, consider purchasing one for your bunker, but keep in mind that noise may attract Zombies.

Provisions

Water

1. Prepare to allocate approximately one gallon of water per person per day. Keep in mind that water will not just be used for drinking. It will also be needed for cleaning (including wounds.)

2. For short term zombie sieges, plastic gallon jugs of water may be stored. These can either be purchased or filled. It is recommended that one prepares for a longer siege, given the tireless nature of the undead.

3. For longer term sieges, water will need to be collected and purified. Water may be collected from rain, a body of water, or a well. Plan and prepare the system well, survival will depend on it.

4. Once water is collected, it will need to be stored. Plastic 50-gallon drums work well for most water storage needs. Whatever containers you decide to use, be sure to mark whether the water is purified for drinking or not.

5. Your water purification system will depend on your collection method. Even if you are preparing for a short term siege, it is wise to have a backup plan. Boiling water may not be enough, stock up on charcoal filters and/or iodine/purification tablets.

Food

1. Canned food is ideal because it does not require water to prepare. Allocate about three cans per person per day.

2. Stock up on prepackaged protein/energy bars. Not only will these provide quick easy meals, but if you need to travel any distance, they are very portable.

3. Stock as much prepackaged/nonperishable food as possible. If you become a victim of a Zombie siege, you may need to go weeks eating only what you have stored.

4. MREs (meals ready to eat) are military rations. They can be purchased online and provide a very high nutrient and calorie content for their size.

5. Hunting may seem like a practical way to gather food, but unless you are experienced, it might not be worth the risk. Remember, anything you intend to consume will need to be dressed and cooked. Keep in mind that a gunshot could attract a hoard of zombies.

6. Buy a large (at least 25 lb.) bag of salt. This can be used to preserve any food you may gather, as well as season otherwise unappetizing food.

7. No matter how much you store, your stockpile is still finite. Purchase a wild edibles guide for your region and have it in your bunker. It will be invaluable if foraging becomes necessary. Gardening might seem like a good option, but zombies have a tendency to destroy gardens by trampling the plants. It wouldn't be worth the effort nor the water required for such a venture.

Shelter

1. Many people often think the best idea when seeking shelter is to leave your home and town behind and try to get out of densely populated areas. While the idea is good is usually a better idea to remain in your home and fortify there. In the initial panic of people attempting to all run from town, there would be mass numbers of people and cars on the roads. The streets would be clogged, zombies would be everywhere and there are a lot of opportunities for things to go awry.

2. There are many homes that can be used as a safe house from the zombies. Some of the more prudent ones would include stilted houses that are built around beaches and rivers that are built to avoid flooding, and the tornado proof houses are another since they are designed to take massive amounts of wear and tear from weather forces.

  • The stilted houses are built high into the air upon the stilts, given their name, and provide an excellent form of defense. With it being so high in the air, conventional attacks on the ground are impossible and there is no need to barricade windows and doors necessarily since you would only need to block the stair way(s) that leads up to the house. At that point the only thing the people living there would need to worry about would be their food supply in terms of physical safety.
  • The tornado proof houses are just as protected, if not more so, by the fact that the majority of them have concrete walls, steel reinforced doors and steel shutters with the windows. Tornado proof houses are already capable of handling the zombies without even needing modifications to the home, the only thing at that point would be to set up the shutters and then worry about food provisions.

3. For standard homes you should put security bars and doors on windows to prevent the zombies from entering. The security bars could only stop zombies from entering for a limited time, as experience shows, and can only take a small group of three zombies to tear it down in twenty four hours. Having a good ten foot chain link fence can hold dozens of zombies for weeks and even months if there numbers remain relatively small. A ten foot cinder block wall reinforced with steel rods and filled with concrete is the safest barrier for small and medium zombie outbreaks. Gates should be made of steel or wrought iron and it should slide to one side and not swing open. You can park your car up against the gate to help prevent a break in.

4. Apartment buildings are easily protected for upstairs tenants since they would only need to block or destroy the stair way to prevent the zombies from getting in. A great advantage with apartments would be in the size of the building, in that a large number of people would most likely be living inside, providing a large number of people who can help defend and supply. However a source of problem would also be the large number of people. There can be a lot of social conflict between the group and a larger amount of supplies would be needed for everyone.
