1. Many people often think the best idea when seeking shelter is to leave your home and town behind and try to get out of densely populated areas. While the idea is good is usually a better idea to remain in your home and fortify there. In the initial panic of people attempting to all run from town, there would be mass numbers of people and cars on the roads. The streets would be clogged, zombies would be everywhere and there are a lot of opportunities for things to go awry.
2. There are many homes that can be used as a safe house from the zombies. Some of the more prudent ones would include stilted houses that are built around beaches and rivers that are built to avoid flooding, and the tornado proof houses are another since they are designed to take massive amounts of wear and tear from weather forces.
3. For standard homes you should put security bars and doors on windows to prevent the zombies from entering. The security bars could only stop zombies from entering for a limited time, as experience shows, and can only take a small group of three zombies to tear it down in twenty four hours. Having a good ten foot chain link fence can hold dozens of zombies for weeks and even months if there numbers remain relatively small. A ten foot cinder block wall reinforced with steel rods and filled with concrete is the safest barrier for small and medium zombie outbreaks. Gates should be made of steel or wrought iron and it should slide to one side and not swing open. You can park your car up against the gate to help prevent a break in.
4. Apartment buildings are easily protected for upstairs tenants since they would only need to block or destroy the stair way to prevent the zombies from getting in. A great advantage with apartments would be in the size of the building, in that a large number of people would most likely be living inside, providing a large number of people who can help defend and supply. However a source of problem would also be the large number of people. There can be a lot of social conflict between the group and a larger amount of supplies would be needed for everyone.

- The stilted houses are built high into the air upon the stilts, given their name, and provide an excellent form of defense. With it being so high in the air, conventional attacks on the ground are impossible and there is no need to barricade windows and doors necessarily since you would only need to block the stair way(s) that leads up to the house. At that point the only thing the people living there would need to worry about would be their food supply in terms of physical safety.
- The tornado proof houses are just as protected, if not more so, by the fact that the majority of them have concrete walls, steel reinforced doors and steel shutters with the windows. Tornado proof houses are already capable of handling the zombies without even needing modifications to the home, the only thing at that point would be to set up the shutters and then worry about food provisions.
